Abstract : This thesis is focused on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and their operational safety during surfacing. The goal is to design a modem to act as a relay between AUVs and the AIS communication system (Automatic identification system). This modem uses both a radio link to gather datafrom the AIS and a underwater acoustic link to communicate with AUVs. Therefore the modem is able to broadcast the surface vessels’positions and kinetics to the AUVs thus helping them to safely surface. The AIS bit rate being higher than the common performances of underwater acoustic modems, a study of its reduction and the number of ships supported by the proposed system is detailed. Furthermore, the communication range between AUVs and the modem can vary during a mission. Hence, the modem needs to be able to adapts its parameters to the situation to be robust regardless of the communication range which represents a challenge in underwater acoustic communication. A modem combining OFDM with a 2D variable length spreading sequence isproposed. It offers a flexible design where frequency and time diversity are used to increase the robustness of the signal at various ranges. During this thesis, the proposed modem performances were studied through simulations and experiments including transmissions done at sea. This thesis was done at IMT Atlantique with the collaboration of Ecole Navale and was co-financed by Thales and Région Bretagne.
