« Qui n’entend point n’y entend rien : νῆϊς, -ιδος “ignorant” »

This paper shows that the compound νῆϊς "ignorant", which the communis opinio identifies as a compound of *weid- "to see, to know", is in fact a compound of ἀϝίω "to hear" (*h2ewi-s-). The form νᾱ- > νη- of the privative prefix is regular for a root with initial laryngeal. The original meaning "not hearing" led to a more general one "not knowing". This compound is important because it sheds some light on the genesis of the neo-prefix νη-, already found in Homer, for consonant-initial roots: the word was early on reanalyses as a compound of *weid-, paving the way for the extension of νη- to consonant-initial roots (νηκερδής, νηπενθής etc.).
L'article montre que le composé νῆϊς "ignorant", traditionnellement rattaché à la racine *weid- "voir, savoir", n'a aucun rapport avec celle-ci. C'est un composé privatif de la racine de ἀϝίω "entendre" (*h2ewi-s-), avec variante νᾱ- > νη- du préfixe privatif, régulière pour une racine à laryngite initiale. Du sens de "qui n'entend pas" on est passé au sens de "qui ignore". Ce composé est un élément important permettant de comprendre la genèse du néo-préfixe νη- trouvé déjà chez Homère dans certains composés privatifs de racines à initiale consonantique: il a été très tôt réanalysé comme un composé de *weid-, ce qui a permis l'extension de νη- à des racines à initiale consonantique (νηκερδής, νηπενθής etc.).
