The influence of straining on the anodic behaviour of iron in an acidic medium

Résumé

The anodic behaviour of iron in 1M H2SO4 has been analysed over a wide range of strain-rates (10−4–10−1 s−1) in terms of the maximum current reached during the deformation in the plastic region. Special emphasis is put on the passive domain of polarization. The current is found to follow a power law of the strain rate of which the exponent is lower than or equal to unity. By taking account of the specimen changes in length and diameter a model is derived on the basis of film breakdown and repair considerations. Computed data are in reasonably good agreement with experiments. The strain-rate dependence of the passive current is shown to be highly sensitive to the form of the repassivation decay considered.
