Electrodeposition of thin electrocatalytic PbO2 layer on FTO substrates

Résumé

Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) is a conductive transparent wide optical band gap thin film semiconductor. Surface modifications of FTO coatings are interesting as electrochemical sensors and as prospective electrode material for anodic syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen and ozone evolution and for other oxygen-transfer reactions, for example, sodium hypochlorite synthesis. Electrocatalytic properties of FTO coatings can be changed by modification of surface with noble metals or oxides as it has been demonstrated for other similar substrates. In this work, the preparation of new transparent electrodes with electrocatalytic properties toward oxidation reactions has been performed by electrodeposition of lead dioxide onto glass substrates covered by a FTO coating [1]. As a result of low electrocatalytical activity of FTO vs the oxygen evolution reaction, lead dioxide deposition with noticeable rate can be expected at potentials much more anodic than 2.0 V. However, if the FTO-electrode after cycle polarization in reference electrolyte is moved into a Pb2+-containing electrolyte, during the first cycle an anodic current peak is observed at 1.6 V, which is attributed to lead dioxide formation on the electrode surface. The second and following cycles differ from the first: the potential of the beginning of lead dioxide deposition is shifted to 150 mV less anodic potentials as well as the anodic current peak. It was shown that the modification of FTO electrodes by PbO2 leads to more conductive electrodes with a very different flatband potential and with an improved donor density. The resulting electrodes, keeping more or less their transparent behaviour, due to the presence of a highly active small amount of lead dioxide on their surface are a very interesting kind of composite oxide electrodes. It has been shown that the electrochemical preparation of a fluoride-doped PbO2 layer in possible on the fluoride-doped tin oxide substrate. Such transparent electrochemical devices can be of great interest for light spectroscopy studies for the better understanding of in-depth electrochemical processes at industrial type electrode materials.
