Les distiques proverbiaux dans la « Geste de Monglane » et dans Beuve de Hantone en prose

Abstract : The prose version of the Geste de Monglane includes 54 proverbial distichs, which the copyist of the only manuscript (Paris, BnF, Arsenal 3351) has highlighted with a recurring layout: a new line for each verse, two sometimes red, sometimes black oblique lines, with the abbreviation nõ [ta] in the margin; the identical layout can be found in the Paris, BnF, MS fr. 12554. of the prose Beuve de Hantone. No doubt what is more significant is that the source of the distichs – Christine de Pizan’s Moral Proverbs – is also the same. This paper first discusses how the proverbs are distributed and integrated in the Geste as well as the changes introduced by the anonymous prose-writer. The paper then examines the relationship between the Geste and the Bevis of Hampton. The fact that, overall, the two prose texts use three quarters of the 101 distichs of Christine (only seven of these in common) indicates that this collection must have circulated widely in Burgundian circles in the second half of the xvth century and leads to a hypothesis on the relationship between the two texts, as well as the two authors.
