Ecrire sur les musiciennes, une question de genre? Les recherches sur les musiciennes à la Société française de musicologie et dans sa revue

Abstract : This article considers the role of women’s studies in the Revue de musicologie and in eight other European and American musicological periodicals (the Revue musicale, Music & Letters, the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, The Musical Quarterly, the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Archiv für Musikwissenschaft, Studien zur Musikwissenschaft, and Acta Musicologica). During its long history, the Revue saw three waves of interest in women musicians: in the 1920s, the 1960s, and the 2000s. In the 1920s, the Revue was among the periodicals that most frequently published articles on this subject, most of them written by men. During the Occupation and in the post-war period, the Revue encountered material difficulties that dramatically reduced the number of studies of women musicians. However, at the beginning of the 1940s, women at the SFM, in particular Yvonne Rokseth and Wanda Landowska, began to take new interest in female musicians. This interest declined at the end of that decade. In the 1960s, the Revue again published some articles on women, but their aim was usually to offer new insights into the life and work of “great men.” Unlike most periodicals of the corpus under consideration here, which were affected by the “boom” in women’s studies in the 1990s, the Revue did not react until a decade later. Despite its phylogenic past, the Revue, today, seems rather resistant to the feminist criticism that emerged from what is widely called the “New Musicology.”
