A structural study of deeply supercooled water

Abstract

A new structural investigation of deeply supercooled water has been performed by neutron diffraction, down to -31.5 degrees C, using emulsions constituted by a mixture of deuteroheptane and CCl4 with sorbitan as surfactant. The pair distribution function of water shows an increase of the spatial correlations which confirms the fact that the structure of deeply supercooled water tends towards that of low-density amorphous ice.
