On the Epistemic and Social Foundations of Mathematics as Tool and Instrument in Observatories, 1793–1846

Résumé

Was mathematics a tool or an instrument in the mind of nineteenth-century observatory scientists? This paper explore that question by focusing on the place of tools and instruments as reflected by the 1793 inventory of the Paris Observatory, computers at Greenwich around 1839, and the development of Bessel functions.
