Les subordonnants de cause chez Plaute
Abstract
Our comparison between the various subordination conjunctions
introducing a causal clause takes into account their correlative structures.
It is based on semantic and syntactic criteria, the placement of the
subordinate clause compared to the main clause, and the distinction, based
on information theory and the informative structure of the sentence,
between the theme and what is being said about it. Thus more specific
distinctions are shown between the different kinds of causes: an
explanatory cause given by the speaker, a generally accepted cause, a
cause related to the speaker’s system of beliefs, a retrospective
justification, and a closure strategy.
