Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to examine Varro's theories on etymology and the origins of language as set out in his De lingua Latina and to compare his views in this area with those of his possible sources, whether or not they are cited (§5), especially Lucretius (§8). We will conclude with some comments on the originality and modernity of Varro's approach.
