The Construction of a Referential Character of Adab: Bāqil and his Beasts
La construction d’un personnage référentiel de l’adab : Bāqil et ses bêtes

The figure of Bāqil, the paragon of stuttering in Arabic literature, aroused the interest of literati as early as the 2nd/8th century. By applying the principles of functional semiotic analysis posed by the theorist Philippe Hamon, it is possible to highlight the stages and methods of the construction of this referential character, which was facilitated by the dissemination of an anecdote in which his lack of discernment deprives him of a gazelle or a goat. The development of a written culture helped to form the standardization of the character, starting from the 3rd/9th century onward. Standardization did not eliminate all forms of textual variation, since the legend was subject to minor adaptations intended to improve its effectiveness in specific cultural contexts. Literati used these adaptations to position themselves or others in relation to a range of characters associated with qualities that together formed a referential system.
La figure de Bāqil, parangon du bégaiement dans la littérature arabe, a suscité l’intérêt des lettrés dès le IIe/VIIIe siècle. Une application des principes de l’analyse sémiotique fonctionnelle posés par le théoricien Philippe Hamon permet de mettre en évidence les étapes et les modalités de la construction du personnage référentiel, facilitée par la diffusion d’une anecdote dans laquelle son manque de discernement le prive d’une gazelle ou d’une chèvre. Le développement d’une culture de l’écrit participe de la standardisation du personnage, opérée au IIIe/IXe siècle et consommée au suivant. La normalisation n’élimine pas toute forme de variation textuelle, puisque la légende fait l’objet d’adaptations mineures, destinées à améliorer son efficacité en contexte culturel, le but étant que les lettrés se positionnent ou positionnent autrui par rapport à une gamme de personnages associés à des qualités, formant ensemble un système référentiel.
