The reception of Norse Mythology in French. A Brief Introduction to Its Multi-Faceted History

This article explores the reception of Norse mythology in France, highlighting its multifaceted history and transnational cultural circulations. It argues that while French language proficiency has declined in international research, France played a significant role in disseminating knowledge of Norse myth from the 17th to the 20th centuries. The study employs quantitative analysis using the Google Books Ngram Viewer to trace the evolving terminology and conceptualization of Norse mythology in French texts, identifying key turning points and paradigm shifts. It also emphasizes the complex interplay of exoticization, rejection, fascination, and appropriation that characterized the French reception of Norse myth over time.
